In a press conference on Friday, Volkswagen CEO Frank Fischer announced that construction is on schedule and the Chattanooga factory is on track for production in 2011. More than half of the $519 million in construction contracts have gone to local companies.
VW will expand the plant by 4300 square feet in order to keep up with demand, citing July sales figures up 6.7%.
Despite the expansion, it doesn't look like the VW pickup named Amarok will be coming to the US.
Finally, Volkswagen has announced a student design competition for a pedestrian bridge to be built between the factory and the training facility. The contest awards cash prizes of $500 to $2500 with the winners selected in January.
