Feb. '10 ROTM Winner

by RareHare in ROTM, February 5, 2010 6:12 pm

Congratulations to Russ for winning February's Ride of the Month!

Name:
Russ Jackson

Make:
1978 VW

Model:
Westfalia Campmobile

How long have you owned your car?
Which time? I bought it in 2000 and sold it in 2004, after 4 years of daily driving. Then I bought it back in 2007 and have owned it since as a secondary vehicle. I estimate it's got 220,000 miles on it, based on paperwork I got with the bus. It was sold new in Houston, TX, I have the original stamped maintenance book. Then sometime in the 80s it found its way to Atlanta, I've got a lot of old registration receipts from someone named Julio C. Rivera. Then it ended up at an estate sale in 2000 (Julio's I guess) where it was sold to a guy who turned around and sold it to me a few days later. He never reigstered it, so I figure I'm the 2nd or 3rd owner.

How have you decided to style it?
It's all stock and original with a few modern upgrades where it counts. It's got a ton of original accessories, including side tent, windshield curtain, child cot, and more.

What is your favorite part of the car?
I'm a fan of the Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, after having it carbed for a year the FI wins hands down. More power, better fuel economy, easier starting, it's a night-and-day difference.

Least favorite part?
The alternator. It's buried deep in the engine tin and a pain in the ass to get out. I've got a cheap one from Auto Zone that's died on me three times, but with a lifetime warranty I get it replaced for free each time.

What is your most memorable moment with the car?
I had a lot of fun cruising to SoWo last year in the bus. I think a lot of people were surprised at how well it kept up with the water-cooled cars, of course that was a different story when we reached the mountains. I had to pull over and let who was behind me pass, then we crawled the rest of the way. Made it in one piece though.

Any future plans?
It needs a little bit of body and paint work to be perfect on the outside.

Have any tips for everyone?
Get a Bentley. And don't be afraid of FI, a lot of people rip it out and install a carb. But the FI system is quite simple and easy to diagnose with a few simple tools.

Any shoutouts you want to make?
Ratwell. Anyone with a bus should visit his site, he's got technical articles and FAQs on just about everything you need to know. I've learned more from his site than anywhere else. I have a complete archive of his site stored on a thumb drive just in case.

Conan O'Brien dresses up 1.5 million Bugatti Veyron like a mouse

by Russ in News Articles, January 21, 2010 11:55 am

Last night, Conan introduced one of the last comedy bits from his short run on the Tonght Show: a Bugatti Veyron dressed like a mouse. Not so much because it was funny but because it's crazy expensive for NBC.

Accompanying the Veyron Mouse was "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, an expensive song to license for broadcast.

Jan. '10 ROTM Winner

by RareHare in ROTM, January 11, 2010 1:31 am

Congratulations to 74benzo for winning January's ROTM

So, what is the story behind the car?
Here it is, my 1974 Mercedes. Its pretty much original besides the radio and rear
speakers. It looks pretty good for the age. I have done tons of mechanical and
cosmetic work (rust...ugh) since i got the car. It had been sitting for about seven
years when I got the 70k original miles, 2 owner, car so you can imagine how much
work it needed. I have owned if for a few months and I plan to keep it for a while!

Name: Dan McDonald
Make: 1974 Mercedes-Benz
Model: 280

How long have you owned the car?: Bought the car in September last year ('09)

How have you decided to style it?: Trying to maintain the classic look of the car.

What is your favorite part of the car?: My favorite part would have to be the front. I love the way it looks. Thats what attracted me to the car.

Least Favorite?: The engine is carburated so it takes a while to start in the cold and it sucks the gas.

What is your most memorable moment with the car?: When I finally got the rust all sanded off and repainted the primed parts because it just looked so good.

Any future plans?: I want to lower it when I find springs that fit it, Put a 15" sub, and repaint it back the same color white but without the bad job I did ha.

Have any tips for everyone?: If your looking at this model make sure you get one of the gas powered ones because the diesel's are way underpowered.

Any shoutouts you want to make?: All my friends that made fun of it and made me want to keep it more haha.

Mods:

Interior: Stock black, JVC Head unit, new speakers all around

Exterior: Off white

Engine: Inline 6 carbed

Suspension: too high.

Blurry sketch of Jetta Compact Coupe?

by Russ in News Articles, January 10, 2010 4:37 pm

This etch-a-sketch like drawing supposedly represents the New Compact Coupe based on the Jetta. Is this a US bait-and-switch for the new Scirocco? Chances are, the real thing will be revealed Monday at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

VW NMS could be priced about 25% below Passat

by Russ in News Articles, January 7, 2010 2:51 pm

VW is considering setting the MSRP of the NMS to around 25% less than the current-model Passat, which has an MSRP of $28,300. That would put the base price around $21,000 for the yet-unnamed Sedan.

Supposedly available as of December 17, the Audi Space on PlayStation Home is quite possibly the closest most of us will ever get to test driving an Audi e-Tron.

A trailer has been released, check the link.
