Congratulations to Jerry for winning June's Ride of the Month!

Name:
Jerry Ashmore

Make:
Volkswagen

Model:
Jetta GLI

Year:
1989

So what is the story with your car?
I was perusing Craigslist and saw a Jetta freshly listed for $700. I knew my fellow Craigslist sharks Smitty and Steve(93Wolfsburg) would be hot on the deal so I needed to act quickly.  I called the guy, took lunch and met him at a shop on Dickerson Pike.  They told him it needed a new fuel distributor and he decided this was too expensive and elected to sell the car instead.  When I got there I saw a clean GLI with 122000 on the odometer.  The kid went through every repair he had made and generally didn't try to cover anything up other than the fact it didn't run.  I offered him $400 and he accepted, but admitted he didn't bring the title with him.  I promptly told him "lets go get it" and followed him to his house and picked up the title to keep him from changing his mind.  I towed the car to the shop that night and determined it had a bad fuel pump.  Once the fuel pump was replaced I had a running/driving car.  Over the past year I have pretty much went through the car and repaired all the little stuff that annoyed me about owning a 21 year old car.

How long have you owned the car?
one year

How have you decided to style it?
Stock, clean and daily driver.

What is your favorite part of the car?
16V runs great and get's good fuel economy.  That and I  get approached everywhere asking about the car and what are those rims.

Least favorite part?
Sometimes the rims(still haven't grown on me) and the engine compartment.

What is your most memorable moment with the car?
Every time someone asks me about the car or compliments me on it.

Any future plans?
Clean up the engine compartment, Megasqirt, cams, keep driving.

Have any tips for anyone?
Build your own car and use individual touches and taste to make it unique.

Any shoutouts you want to make?
Probably both my parents for bringing me up in a family enthusiastic about automobiles, the guys here at the shop and TnEuros and the local european car community for keeping auto ownership a passion.

I'm jealous.  Sweet ride, and sweet deal on nabbing it for $400.
